Still Running

She has four minutes to herself. Four minutes before the knock on the bathroom door, before the homework that hasn’t been started, before the spaghetti that needs tending. Four minutes to exist as something other than a mother, a wife, a daughter, a manager of everyone else’s life. The four minutes never last. This is the opening of Still Running, a raw and unflinching memoir about what it means to disappear while being indispensable. Maha Amer writes about the assignment no one articulates but everyone enforces—the silent agreement that mothers must vanish while remaining the glue holding everything together. She speaks of the recognition gap: visible for what she produces for others, invisible for what she produces for herself. Of the anxiety that has lived in her body since age thirteen, transformed into fuel for achievement, until motherhood made fuel irrelevant. Of the relentless weight of accountability—her children’s every milestone becomes evidence of her competence, her absence becomes a crime, while his help is celebrated as a gift. Through six interconnected essays, Amer traces her journey from scoring highest on board exams and winning exhibitions, to being gradually erased even as her external achievements mounted. She names the paradox: she cannot be the mother she thinks she should be and pursue the ambitions that keep her alive. Both demand totality. Both require complete self. But she refuses to accept that the only choice is disappearing. Still Running is not about finding balance. It is not a solution. It is the practice of staying alive—of taking the 3-day trip alone despite the guilt, of teaching other people’s children while managing her own, of writing this book while the dishes sit undone. It is what it looks like to keep becoming, knowing the becoming will never be complete, that the paradox will never be solved, that the guilt will always arrive.
