L’oratorio Theodora fu eseguito per la prima volta al Covent Garden Theatre il 16 marzo 1750 e colse di sorpresa il pubblico londinese. Händel aveva infatti compiuto una svolta di centottanta gradi nella scelta del soggetto. Gli episodi grandiosi dell’Antico Testamento, le gloriose vicende di Salomone, Saul o Giuda Maccabeo non sono più al centro dell’opera: la giovane martire Theodora non guida né una comunità né delle truppe in battaglia.
In un’opera lontana dallo spettacolo grandioso degli oratori biblici, Händel ci invita a contemplare la toccante vicenda di un dramma personale, un dramma degli albori del cristianesimo alimentato dalla coscienza, dalla fede e dal dolore che esse provocano

Compositore tedesco.La vita. il trasferimento a londra. Figlio di un barbiere-cerusico, ricevette la prima istruzione musicale da F.W. Zachow, organista della Liebfrauenkirche a Halle. Incominciò a comporre a dieci anni; ma poiché suo padre era contrario alla carriera di musicista, nel 1702 entrò all'università di Halle per studiarvi diritto. Lo stesso anno divenne organista del duomo; l'anno seguente lasciò Halle per Amburgo, dove suonò in orchestra sotto la direzione di R. Keiser e conobbe J. Mattheson. Il suo primo melodramma, Almira, parte in italiano e parte in tedesco, fu rappresentato ad Amburgo nel 1705; ad esso ne seguirono altri tre, ora perduti. Nel 1706 raggiunse l'Italia, dove divenne in breve famoso come compositore di melodrammi e dove rappresentò il suo primo oratorio, La Resurrezione,...
