Nine words arrived on a secure network at four in the morning, stamped with tomorrow's date. Don't let them convince you the debt is real. By 2049 nothing in the country runs without temporal escrow. A turbine does eight hours of work in forty minutes. A tunnel is bored in a fortnight that should have taken a year. The hours are not conjured out of nothing — they are borrowed, withheld from somewhere else, from a derelict tank farm in a wet field, from a decommissioned plant nobody has visited in years. Every transfer balances to nine decimal places. The physics is immaculate. Dr. Daniel Rourke wrote the equation the whole system is audited against. He is the last man in the country who should be surprised by a number. Then his mentor vanishes out of a sealed conference room during a forty-three-second suspension, leaving a warm chair, a cracked mug still steaming, and an institutional record stating that he retired fourteen months ago. Five people watched him walk in and close the door. The log says there were only ever five in the room. The message dated tomorrow did not travel backward in time. Nothing can. It came out of a place that is running seven point six two times faster than the rest of the country — and somebody is pushing that calendar back by hand, over and over, so that nobody ever notices. A records clerk who pulls one unauthorised extract is dead inside the day, killed by a suspension boundary drawn so precisely that it caught his legs and the sensor on his arm and left the pump on his belt outside it, dosing a man who had stopped. Three days later Daniel finds his own name on a collection schedule, beneath a consent instrument dated to an afternoon he spent at a conference abroad, carrying a signature he can prove he never wrote. Two thousand four hundred and sixteen living people are listed as repayment sources. Nine hundred and forty have already been collected. The arithmetic that justifies every one of them is a national debt of eleven years and two months. And when Daniel finally runs that debt properly, it has already been paid. In full. On time. By the industrial reservoirs that were always supposed to carry it. Which means the second invoice — the one with human beings on it — is not repaying anything at all. It is buying something. With a forged credential, a suspended auditor who has her own reasons for helping him, a decommissioning engineer who reported the fault eleven times and then stopped, and a federal investigator who does not believe a word he says, Daniel has to prove a fraud in which nothing was forged, no entry was false, and every signature belongs to somebody who was entitled to write it. Because the lie was never in the ledger. It is in the conversion — in the one line nobody has ever been asked to justify, the line that says how many hours of weighted spacetime equal one year of a human life. Somebody chose that number. Somebody revises it four times a year. And a window is already scheduled to open on Daniel Rourke, at half past seven in the morning, at a controller he will never see. The instrument does not say how long he will be under. It says: until reconciled. A standalone hard science-fiction thriller about stolen time, immaculate paperwork, and the difference between a debt you owe and a debt that somebody has decided you owe.
