The Torment

In this intense and provocative collection of short stories, former occasional reviewer Giuseppe Sirugo concludes the final chapter of the cycle dedicated to Father Giuseppe. A small book divided into three parts that explores the thin and dangerous boundary between the sacred and the profane. THE TORMENT: Within the walls of a church on the hills of Turin, Father Josef discovers a secret manuscript by his predecessor, Found Alone, which exposes the illusion of celibacy. Driven by a new and uninhibited "philosophy of the flesh," the priest undergoes his metamorphosis, transforming into a charismatic leader who turns transgression into a heretical liturgy. ENCOUNTERS: A dense stratification of lives and contradictions, playing out the extremely tense relationship between Father Giuseppe—a giant protected by a monastic habit and a sexual legend—and Elenina, a brilliant magistrate accustomed to the concreteness of the courts. A ruthless investigation into what happens when illusion collides with reality, revealing the emptiness behind the facade. DREAM FRAGMENT: The epilogue, where the boundary between reality and nocturnal nightmare blurs, dragging the protagonist into a Sunday mass that becomes a grotesque staging of his own failure, due to a hard-on he has between his legs.
