Trapped
In an old farmhouse at the edge of a rural valley, Dr. Skip keeps a study most people never see: a room of instruments, specimens, and a curiosity that has always bent toward the places others look away from. When a college student named Evan Finch arrives to deliver pig heads for dissection practice, he is drawn upstairs for what seems like an afternoon of scientific conversation. It becomes something else entirely. As the visit turns strange, and then frightening, a third figure enters: Marcie, the doctor's quiet, watchful sister, whose calm concealment of purpose is more unsettling than anything her brother has said. What follows is a fire that consumes the house in minutes, a rescue that complicates every assumption about who the story's villain really is, and a small town left to decide, in the absence of certainty, what story it can live with. Told through the eyes of the people left standing afterward, the account follows Evan as he tries to carry an ordinary life forward, Dr. Skip as he settles into a much smaller room above the pharmacy, and Marcie as she disappears into her own private reckoning. Years pass. Letters arrive without much explanation. A postcard changes hands. A field grows over where a study used to be. This is a story less about what happened in one house on one afternoon than about the quiet, ordinary years that follow a fire, and what people choose to carry, set down, or burn out of themselves once the flames are gone.
