This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. Riley built his career on the order and stability required to run Bensalem Motor Works, the world's most advanced automotive plant. When the power and communications go dark in a national crisis called The Great Gridlock, he does what most people do. He keeps his head down. Signs what needs signing. Tells himself it’s an emergency. For now. Each concession is reasonable. Each one makes the next one easier. Until it’s not. As reality sets in, the question becomes what do you do when no one is coming to save you? Some people stop waiting. Riley meets two people he can’t quite dismiss. Victoria is a master teacher who gives students the liberty to perform while holding them to a high standard. Leo is a street-smart teenager who survived the collapse by taking what he needed and sharing what he had. Riley likes them. He doesn’t believe it’s enough. Bensalem becomes a refuge where a nurse opens a clinic to keep people healthy, and a teacher builds a school to turn children's restless energy toward learning. Engineers repurpose the plant into a hydroturbine so Bensalem can share its light with others. None of them is a hero with a plan to save the country. Elections, institutions, and the machinery of power only hold when ordinary people show up, take responsibility, keep faith with neighbors, and focus on what they can control one action at a time. Riley understands order. Victoria and Leo understand freedom. Which saves Bensalem?
