What remains of a life when history strips away career, home, health, marriage, and even the right to speak? The Unknown Homeland, by an anonymous author, answers with Father Pavel, a Petersburg scholar-priest sentenced to twenty-five years in Siberia. Yet this rare novella of Orthodox samizdat literature is not chiefly an indictment of persecution. Its great surprise is that exile enlarges the human world: a murderer carries the priest’s parcels, a young thief asks to become his son, villagers surrender food and shelter, and a place of punishment begins to resemble home. The author refuses the consolations of easy heroism. Pavel is weak, divided, and unable to make his loving but discordant marriage whole. Suffering does not automatically redeem anyone. What changes people is his attention to them after every worldly distinction has been taken from him. For the listener weary of measuring a life by achievement or visibility, that claim lands with unusual force. This new translation preserves the story’s clear, rhythmic dialogue and vivid narrative.
