Compositore inglese. Allievo di Stanford, divenne nel 1907 direttore musicale al Morley College di Londra. Appassionato di filosofia e letteratura orientale (in particolare sanscrita), nel 1918 compì un viaggio in Grecia e in Asia Minore, derivandone suggestioni esotiche per la sua musica, peraltro anche influenzata da Wagner e, nelle opere della maturità, dal gruppo dei Sei e da Stravinskij: tendenze specialmente evidenti in Sita (1906) e Sàvitri (1908), fra le sue sette opere teatrali; nella suite The Planets (1916), la più celebre fra le sue composizioni sinfoniche, nella quale cerca di tradurre nei suoni il diverso carattere astrologico di ciascun pianeta; nei Choral Hymns from the Rig-Veda (1909-12) e nello Hymn of Jesus (1917), su un testo tratto dagli Atti apocrifi di S.
