Resigning himself to the autumn of his life, the Duke prepares to seek a wife from three of his former mistresses, selected by his son, following the tradition of Paris by offering an apple to the chosen one. However when a radiant young girl, Perpetua arrives. The Duke snatches the apple and offers it to her, but she draws on a pistol and shatters it. Christopher Fry

(Bristol 1907 - Chichester 2005) drammaturgo e sceneggiatore inglese. Nato come Christopher Harris, all’inizio della sua carriera ha adottato il cognome materno. Ha contribuito alla rinascita del teatro in versi con le sue commedie (La signora non è da bruciare, The lady’s not for burning, 1948) e i suoi drammi religiosi (Sonno di prigionieri, A sleep of prisoners, 1951, nt; La tenebra è luce sufficiente, The dark is light enough, 1954, nt) in cui è riuscito a fondere il linguaggio quotidiano con quello lirico, l’umano col trascendente. Tra le altre opere: Un briciolo di sole (A yard of sun: a summer comedy, 1970, nt), Sorella Dora (Sister Dora, 1977, nt), Genio, talento e fallimento (Genius, talent and failure, 1986, nt), Alla ricerca di un linguaggio (Looking for a language, 1992, nt).
