Under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959, a video shop didn't need a trial to lose its stock. If a magistrate agreed a tape was liable to deprave and corrupt, the copies could simply be declared forfeit and destroyed — no jury, no named defendant, and often no public record beyond a police log and a stripped shelf. It was the lower-bar, higher-volume side of Britain's video nasty panic, and it swept up far more titles than the 39 films that ever reached a full obscenity conviction.
