Jefferies Richard

(Coate, Wiltshire, 1848 - Goring, Sussex, 1887) scrittore inglese. Esordì con romanzi ispirati alla propria fanciullezza trascorsa in campagna, caratterizzati da un’attenta osservazione della natura (La fattoria di Green Ferne, Green Ferne farm, 1880; Bevis, storia di un ragazzo, Bevis, the story of a boy, 1882; Amarillide alla fiera, Amaryllis at the fair, 1887). In Dove un tempo era Londra (After London, 1885) tentò invece il romanzo di genere apocalittico. Le sue pagine migliori sono nei saggi sulla vita rurale inglese, scorta con gli occhi di un bambino: Il guardacaccia a riposo (The gamekeeper at home, 1878), Vita selvaggia in una contea meridionale (Wild life in a southern county, 1879), Il bracconiere dilettante (The amateur poacher, 1879).
