The Ward and the Stranger
A slow burn regency romance. Nathaniel Rowan rides into Rivenhall on a lame horse, in a worn coat, and is given a bed by the one person at the Hall who does not ask who he is. Marianne Ellery is twenty-one, small and quiet, and has kept the estate books for seven years in a house that was not meant to be hers. He does not tell her that he is the heir the village buried in 1812. His uncle Silas Fanshawe has held Rivenhall ever since, with a genial smile, a green coat and a forged claim. The only proof of the marriage that made Nathaniel a baron was cut out of the parish register and burned. Almost. Marianne knows the ledgers, the church chest and every locked door in the shut east wing. She begins to see what the Hall has been hiding, and who has been paying for it. Then the mill burns, a warrant is sworn, and she is shut in the nursery for her nerves. The Keld is in flood. She has a borrowed mare, a scorched page against her ribs, and one night to cross the moor.
