What the Tide Never Told

Claire Harmon promised herself a real vacation this time — no notebook, no case, nothing but the impossible turquoise water beneath the plane's wing. Her old friend Veronica has married spectacularly well, and the whole glittering circle of her husband Vishen's friends has gathered at a cliffside estate on Mallorca for a week that's supposed to be nothing but sun, wine, and easy company. Then, on a blind mountain bend above the coast road, a car comes at them too fast, swerves at the last possible second, and vanishes — leaving Claire with nothing to go on but a color, a rental sticker, and the unmistakable stillness on Veronica's face of someone who has just recognized a ghost. By the time a stranger's body surfaces in the water off the estate's private cove, Claire has already stopped pretending this trip is only a vacation. Everyone at the long dinner table has a reason to want him gone. But it's the warmest person in the house — the one who's been refilling glasses and smoothing over every awkward silence since the first night — who has the most to lose if Claire keeps noticing what she notices.
