When Intelligence Changes Hands: Rethinking Human Knowledge, Work, and Power in the Age of AI

What happens when intelligence is no longer exclusively human? Artificial intelligence is changing more than how we work. It is reshaping the value of knowledge, the meaning of expertise, the structure of organizations, and the balance of power between humans and machines. In When Intelligence Changes Hands: Rethinking Human Knowledge, Work, and Power in the Age of AI, Mike Liu explores these transformations through twelve thought-provoking chapters that combine professional experience, practical observations, and critical reflection. From language learning and the changing geography of work to AI-generated misinformation, the limitations of machine reasoning, and the possibility of independent artificial intelligence, the book challenges familiar assumptions about what makes human intelligence valuable. Rather than treating AI as either a miracle or a threat, Liu examines the opportunities and contradictions that emerge when machines become increasingly capable of performing tasks once reserved for humans. As intelligence becomes more accessible, will human expertise lose its value—or will independent thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to question answers become more important than ever? When Intelligence Changes Hands invites readers to reconsider not only what AI can do, but also what humans must continue to understand, question, and decide for themselves.
