In response to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police in the United States of America, and the increasingly violent nature of Western imperialism and its influence on political systems all over the world, Dr Mukti Barton explores biblical interpretations of these injustices. She demonstrates the dominance of Western, mammonic interpretations of the Bible, and offers alternative readings from the tradition of contextual, liberation hermeneutics. Is it the mammonic world, being slaves to wealth, that Jesus the Saviour saves us from? If Jesus' way is the only way, was it ever implemented successfully in the biblical world? If Jesus' way is followed in our present day context, could humanity be saved from mammonic destruction to build God's realm of justice and peace?
