The Year We Almost Stayed

North Ridge, New York. Fall 1990. The smallest school in the state still fielding eleven men is defending its Section IV title, and left tackle Ben Kozlowski is the wall the whole season leans on — even after a teammate's cleat leaves his leg too battered to carry him. That teammate is Rick Ciccone: star running back, Syracuse-bound, the town's golden boy. Everyone in North Ridge cheers when Rick runs the ball. Almost no one sees what happens when he's alone with his girlfriend, Theresa — or how hard the coaches, the principal, and the school board work not to look. Ben sees it. So does Jerry, his best friend, who has loved Theresa quietly since seventh grade and has a farm and an aging father waiting for him after graduation. So does Megan, the valedictorian with a reporter's notebook and a family secret of her own. And Tori, who tapes Ben's leg before every game, sees exactly what his loyalty is costing him. But Theresa is done waiting to be rescued. Through mud, mixtapes, Friday nights, and a winter that turns dangerous, they will learn what their town protects — and who pays when someone finally refuses to stay quiet. The Year We Almost Stayed is a raw, nostalgic coming-of-age novel about grit, loyalty, first love, and the question every small-town kid eventually faces: Do you ever really leave the place that made you — or do you just learn to carry it with you? Perfect for readers who love small-town sports dramas, 1990s nostalgia, and stories about the friends who shape us for life.
