The Athenian Constitution

The Athenian Constitution (Athenaion Politeia) is a foundational political and historical treatise attributed to Aristotle, one of the greatest philosophers in Western thought. Rediscovered in the late 19th century, this detailed account offers a unique and invaluable look into the evolution, structure, and function of Athenian democracy—from its monarchical beginnings to its golden age under Pericles and its eventual decline. Divided into 69 concise sections, the text provides both a historical narrative of political changes in Athens and a systematic description of its democratic institutions. Aristotle (or possibly one of his students) meticulously outlines the roles of public officials, legislative bodies, legal systems, and civic procedures, making this work the earliest surviving detailed account of any ancient constitution. Unlike abstract philosophical dialogues, The Athenian Constitution is a pragmatic and empirical study. It blends historical research with sharp political analysis, reflecting Aristotles broader interest in categorizing and understanding different political systems. For historians, political scientists, legal scholars, and students of classical antiquity, this text is a priceless window into the functioning of one of history's most influential democracies. This edition includes all 69 parts, complete with contextual commentary to illuminate the socio-political background of ancient Athens. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the roots of democracy and classical governance.
