Le 4 Suites registrate sono tratte dalle semiopere "Dioclesian, King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, The Indian". Uno pei più originali compositori del suo tempo, Henry Purcell compose musiche per una quarantina di lavori teatrali; molti di questi brani furono pubblicati dopo la sua morte in una raccolta intitolata "A Collection of Ayres, Compos'd for the Theatre, und upon Other Occasions". La restrazione dei brani su questo disco è stata effettuata nel 1994, ora viene riproposta legittimamente in tuta la sua verve.

Compositore inglese. Figlio di un musicista, fu dapprima cantore nella cappella reale. Nel 1673, quando mutò la voce, divenne aiutante del custode degli strumenti di Carlo ii. Nel 1677 fu nominato compositore per i «violini del re», nel 1679 organista dell'abbazia di Westminster, nel 1682 fra gli organisti della cappella reale. La sua prima opera pubblicata fu una serie di sonate a tre (Sonatas of three parts, 1683). I suoi incarichi ufficiali continuarono sotto Giacomo ii e Guglielmo iii. Fu sepolto nell'abbazia di Westminster. La musica teatrale. P. incominciò a scrivere musiche di scena nel 1680, ma la maggior parte della sua musica per il teatro fu composta negli ultimi anni della sua vita, dal 1690.
