The Backup Husband

At twenty, Sophie Bennett and Jamie Mercer made a ridiculous promise. If they were both still unmarried at thirty-five, they would marry each other. It was written on the back of a takeaway menu at three in the morning, fuelled by vodka, bad dating experiences and the absolute certainty that thirty-five was impossibly far away. Fifteen years later, Sophie turns thirty-five newly single, heartbroken and wondering how the future she thought she'd planned disappeared so quickly. Then Jamie sends her a photograph. He kept the contract. And he has one question. Are we doing this? Sophie isn't about to marry a man she hasn't properly seen in five years—even if that man happens to be her former best friend. But when Jamie suggests six dates to discover whether their twenty-year-old selves might have known something they didn't, Sophie agrees. Six dates. No promises. No expectations. And definitely no falling in love. But the more Sophie gets to know the man Jamie has become, the harder it is to remember why marrying him was ever supposed to be the backup plan. Because sometimes the person you choose when everything else fails turns out to be the person you'd choose anyway. A warm, funny and emotional contemporary romance about friendship, second chances, unexpected love and discovering that happily ever after isn't about finding certainty—it's about finding someone worth choosing.
