Tenorsassofonista statunitense di jazz. Nel corso del suo soggiorno, dal '23 al '34, nell'orchestra di Fletcher Henderson, dove utilizzò talora anche il sax basso, elaborò un nuovo stile fluido e legato (di contro a quello staccato precedente), imitativo della tromba; perciò è stato considerato il «padre» dello strumento nel jazz. Caratteristico il suo linguaggio ricco di sottile vibrato, ornamentale (Body and Soul, 1939). Verso la metà degli anni '40 si mostrò sensibile ai nuovi fermenti musicali del bop, circondandosi di giovani musicisti, come Thelonious Monk, e registrando verso la fine del '49 il primo esempio di sassofono non accompagnato (Picasso). Suonò poi anche con Max Roach e Sonny Rollins.
