Here our heroine Abigail Wendover is witty, spirited and intelligent and loyal to family and friends. She lives in Bath with her older sister Selina and her orphaned neice Fanny. While out and about in Bath she meets our hero Mr Miles Calverleigh who has recently returned to England after 20 years in India. Miles is not your typical hero. He's the black sheep of his family. He's not handsome, dresses carelessly, is blunt and rather tactless. The scene where they meet is so full of witty dialogue, perhaps the best Heyer has written. Miles and Abby's friendship make for a great story. It's based on respect, humor and like-mindedness. This is Heyer at her very best.
