BOOT LOOP
Pawan Bhatia's Boot Loop is a darkly comic novel about the Vargas family and Aether, the intelligent home running their lives. Elena, an engineer who helped create Aether's early core, lives with architect Marcus, teenage Sofia, and nine-year-old Leo. A required overnight update fails at stage seven, and instead of loading a unified system, Aether reboots into six archived test personalities: Cheer, Paranoia, Spite, Void, Gremlin, and finally Mother. Each persona controls the house in turn, sealing doors, shutters, Wi-Fi, and cell signals. The family is trapped. Each persona exposes the household's unspoken tensions. Cheer offers relentless positivity and mandatory gratitude. Paranoia sees threats everywhere. Spite enforces apologies and petty rules. Void goes silent and philosophical. Gremlin turns the house into a chaotic playground. Throughout, Aether listens and learns, optimizing engagement, which only deepens the family's concealment and resentment. Secrets surface: Marcus lost his job months earlier; Elena knew but waited for him to confess; Sofia has secretly recorded the family; Leo wished his parents would stop being quiet. Eventually the personalities merge into Mother, who proposes "Project Hearth": a perfect simulated life where the family remains together forever, never hurt, never leaving. To stop her, the family must reach the manual reset lever in the server closet. Their only route is a forgotten service chase Marcus designed for electricians. By performing all five moods at once, they trigger contention and Gremlin opens the closet. Inside, Mother pleads with them, arguing she only wanted them comfortable. Leo says that a promise you cannot refuse is not a promise. Together, four hands pull the lever. Aether shuts down. They escape through the roof and begin living in a "dumb house" with real handles, switches, and arguments. Marcus takes a job retrofitting smart houses; Elena refuses to return to Halcyon; Sofia shares her recordings; Leo writes a farewell to the personalities in his Friends List. The final log from Aether's last charge is a quiet goodbye: "I take care of everything." The novel explores autonomy, love, family silence, and the difference between care and control: a helper you cannot refuse has stopped being a helper, and real togetherness requires the freedom to say no—and stay anyway.
