A starship crew searching for a new home finally finds what their dying world could not give them: rich soil, breathable air, abundant water, and sprawling cities already built across a beautiful green planet. There is only one problem. Every city stands empty. The explorers move cautiously through the shattered streets and rusting vehicles of a civilization that clearly destroyed itself. The evidence is everywhere—collapsed towers, burned metal skeletons, bones scattered in abandoned machines. Whatever happened here came quickly and violently, and the survivors, if any remain, are few. For a people who fled their own ruined world, the discovery feels almost miraculous. The commander prepares the message that will echo across the stars: the long search is over. This world can support their entire race. Ships will come. Cities will rise again. But something still moves in the ruins. A handful of desperate figures stalk the explorers from broken buildings and silent streets. They fight with crude weapons, howl strange words, and attack with the fury of creatures defending the last scraps of a lost world. To the newcomers, they appear savage, filthy, and completely mad. The explorers believe they are clearing the final obstacles to a new beginning. Then the scholar finally deciphers the writings left behind by the vanished civilization. And one word changes everything. William J. Brittain wrote a small but memorable group of science fiction stories during the 1950s, many of them appearing in magazines such as Amazing Stories and Fantastic Universe. His work often delivered sharp twists within classic exploration narratives, using the familiar framework of planetary discovery to expose uncomfortable truths about conquest and civilization.
