The Coroner for West Surrey stated: "There is no doubt this poor man was diabolically murdered." He added: "In my experience, I never came across a more horrid case than this." The directed verdict of the Coroner's Inquest jury was: "Wilful murder by a person or persons unknown." In the tiny, historic village of Byfleet, Surrey, U.K., in the late evening hours of January 12, 1888, James Chuter, a 28-year-old grocer, entered the residence that he shared with his father, George Chuter--a 67-year old retired carpenter and innkeeper. In the dark, James stumbled over a dead body sprawled on the kitchen floor. The body was that of his father, George, lying in a huge pool of blood. George was horribly mutilated. His head had been bashed to a pulp multiple times with his own poker. His throat had been slashed from ear-to-ear with his own carving knife, down to the spinal vertebrae. George was almost decapitated. Only the knot in George's cravat had prevented the long knife from severing his head from his torso. The Surrey Police found no clues at the crime scene that revealed the identity of the perpetrator (or perpetrators). It was a perfect crime: a 'locked room' mystery. There were no eyewitnesses. George was alone in his kitchen when he was murdered, and his cottage was locked. Police found no signs of forcible entry. George's son James had an air-tight alibi for the time of the murder. Police never found a viable suspect--or even a person of interest. The police were utterly baffled, and they remained so despite a long investigation. Most perplexing, there was no credible motive for the crime apparent from the evidence visible at the crime scene. There was only groundless speculation by the Surrey Constabulary and the British press. The Byfleet Murder has remained unsolved for 136 years. It has never been officially re-investigated by any law enforcement agency, or unofficially investigated by a private detective or journalist. No book on The Byfleet Murder and Mutilation has ever appeared in print. That is, until now. Mark Starr is the first author to re-investigate the mysterious, unsolved murder of George Chuter since the Surrey Constabulary abandoned this case. One hundred and thirty-six years after the fact, Starr has solved this mysterious crime—first, by meticulously re-examining all the known crime scene evidence with modern technology; and then, by revealing new-found, authentic crime scene evidence never seen before. In this first volume of the series A Trail of Blood, Mark Starr takes an in-depth look at all the evidence known in the 19th Century about this enigmatic murder/mutilation. Then, he finds new physical evidence that still exists in 2024--evidence that was never known in the 19th Century by the Surrey Constabulary, the Coroner, or the British press. This new-found physical evidence reveals that the murder and mutilation of George Chuter constituted a far more complex crime than was ever imagined by the police in 1888. Starr reveals physical crime scene evidence of a ritualistic sacrifice, committed by a hermetic, homicidal, religious cult of three killers who worked in concert. Starr's investigation into The Byfleet Murder & Mutilation will continue in Volume 2, to be released in 2026. Starr will reveal even more physical evidence in Byfleet. This additional evidence will corroborate all the evidence presented in Volume 1--and it will lead to the definitive solution: identification of the killer(s) and the mysterious motive. Volumes 1 & 2 in this series are focused solely on The Byfleet Murder & Mutilation. These two ebooks contain numerous hyperlinks to facilitate navigation. They are copiously illustrated with color photographs and drawings of relevance to the crime.
