THE CASE FOR ISRAEL
WHO IS ISRAEL—AND WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO CLAIM THE NAME? Few names in human history carry more theological, historical, political, and prophetic weight than Israel. Israel is the name of a man who wrestled with Elohim. It is the name of twelve tribes, a covenant nation, a divided kingdom, a scattered people, and a modern state. Yet Scripture does not always use the name in precisely the same way. So who—or what—is Israel? Is Israel defined by ancestry, covenant, faith, nationality, or some combination of them? Did the Church replace Israel, become Israel, or join Israel? What happened to the northern tribes after the Assyrian conquest? Are Judah and Israel interchangeable? Who are the "gentiles" addressed in the New Testament? And does the establishment of a modern nation prove the fulfillment of every prophecy associated with the ancient name? In The Case for Israel, Robert Arthur McDuffie approaches these explosive questions as an investigator presenting evidence before a court. Beginning before Jacob received the name Israel, the investigation follows the covenant story through Abraham, the exodus, Mount Sinai, the divided kingdom, the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, the prophetic promises of restoration, the ministry of Yahoshua, and the writings of the apostles. It then carries the evidence into modern history, examining Christian Zionism, political Zionism, Jewish identity, nationalism, and the competing claims surrounding the modern State of Israel. At the center of the investigation are three biblical categories: True Israel receives the Word of Yahovah through faith and walks in covenant with Him. Apostate Israel possesses or professes a genuine connection to Israel while rejecting the covenant that defines Israel's relationship with Yahovah. Counterfeit Israel claims Israel's identity, inheritance, promises, or authority without possessing a claim that survives careful biblical and historical examination. These categories challenge several popular assumptions. Ancestry can be genuine while faithfulness is absent. A person born outside Jacob's natural family can be joined to the covenant people. Religious institutions can preserve biblical names while departing from biblical worship. Political recognition can establish a state—but it cannot compel Heaven to recognize a covenantal identity. This is not a book of racial accusation, collective condemnation, or political propaganda. It is an appeal to examine every claim by the same standard. Scripture serves as the primary witness for covenantal truth, while history, archaeology, linguistics, genealogy, and original documents help reconstruct what happened to identifiable peoples and institutions. Facts are separated from interpretations. Established conclusions are distinguished from reasonable inferences. Popular claims are traced to their sources, and evidence is tested regardless of whom it supports. The Case for Israel does not ask readers to accept a predetermined verdict. It asks them to hear the witnesses. Examine the history. Search the Scriptures. Test every identity claim. And confront the question behind every other question: Which Israel is the Bible addressing? The evidence is ready to be entered into the record. THE COURT IS NOW IN SESSION.
