Cast the First Shadow

Ernie Combs has spent his entire life avoiding bright light, crowded sidewalks, and curious eyes. Since childhood he has carried a difference so disturbing to others that it drove his family from neighborhood to neighborhood and turned every school into a battleground. By the time he reaches adulthood, safety matters more to him than happiness. He takes a quiet warehouse job, keeps to dim places, and tries not to attract attention. But isolation wears on him. Ernie wants companionship. He wants love. Most of all, he wants proof that he is not alone in the world. Then one afternoon on Fourth Avenue he sees a frightened young woman moving through the city exactly the way he does. Christine carries the same secret Ernie has hidden all his life, and their connection is immediate. Together they build a fragile little refuge inside her cramped apartment, shut away from a world that has always treated difference with fear and disgust. Yet happiness proves harder to hold than Ernie imagined. The closer he comes to ordinary life, the more he begins to crave the approval he once despised. Marc Brandel’s “Cast The First Shadow” turns a strange fantasy premise into a painfully human story about shame, longing, and the terrible cost of wanting to belong. Marc Brandel wrote for radio, television, film, and fiction during a career that crossed several mediums. His work appeared in publications including The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, where “Cast The First Shadow” was originally published in 1954. Brandel later became known for suspense novels including The Man Who Came Back and The Choosing, bringing the same emotional tension and sharp understanding of fear found in this haunting story. “Cast The First Shadow” remains one of his most memorable short works because its horror grows not from monsters or violence, but from ordinary cruelty and the desperate need to be accepted.
