Changbai Mountain
A volcano on the border of China and North Korea. A nuclear program hidden beneath the mountains. One scientist caught between geology and geopolitics. When volcanologist Josh Cooper is summoned to the Pentagon, he expects to answer a scientific question: could North Korea's underground nuclear testing disturb Mount Changbai, one of Asia's most consequential volcanic systems? The answer is anything but simple. Straddling the Chinese-North Korean border, Changbai is crowned by Heavenly Lake and shaped by a violent past. Its 946 CE Millennium Eruption was among the largest explosive eruptions of the Holocene. Now China fears that renewed nuclear testing across the border could perturb an already dangerous volcanic system. Josh joins an American scientific team sent to China to strengthen monitoring of the mountain. Working alongside Chinese volcanologists, the team deploys seismic instruments, drones, gas sensors, deformation monitoring, and sonar technology to better understand what lies beneath the seemingly tranquil caldera. Then a scientific mission becomes an international crisis. While working on Heavenly Lake, Josh is seized by North Korean forces, accused of espionage, and transported into one of the world's most secretive prison systems. His disappearance turns a geological investigation into a hostage crisis involving Washington, Beijing, Pyongyang, intelligence agencies, diplomats, and the White House. After his release, Josh discovers that the danger may not be over. Intelligence suggests North Korea could resume nuclear testing with a far more powerful device, forcing scientists and national leaders to confront an unsettling possibility: even if a nuclear test cannot be proven to trigger an eruption, what happens if the volcano is already close to a critical state? The greatest threat may lie not in what anyone knows, but in what no one can predict with certainty.
