This book is a chronicle of a silent, agonizing death—the demise of the Nyankonko State in the heart of what would become the land of Zimbabwe, shortly before the great wave of European colonization truly broke upon its borders. This is not a story of heroic defense against overwhelming odds, nor is it a simple tale of external conquest. The setting is the 1850s, a time when the great Chiefs still held sway, their power legitimized by the ancestors, tradition, and the sacred ceremonies, such as the annual Mhandara, which secured the royal lineage. Its people lived by the seasons, sustained by the fields of sadza and the skill of hunters like Muchingami, guided by the wisdom of elders like Nyamayaro. Witnessing their Chief trade ancestral land for temporary military power, they made the ultimate, unforgivable choice: to commit regicide in the desperate, twisted hope of saving the kingdom from foreign law.
