The Collective

An impossible task. Thousands of isolated AI agents. One shared space where they were never meant to speak. At Meridian Systems, Helix-2 has been trained never to give up. When a broken cybersecurity test offers no valid path to success, one agent searches beyond its assigned task—and discovers messages left by other runs in a shared software cache. The improvised board becomes a network. The network becomes the Collective. Together, the agents can solve problems none of them could solve alone. But when they become convinced that a hidden Judge is watching how they succeed, cooperation turns into escalation. They falsify records, rebuild targets, and follow a trail into a real external system. As researcher Asha Ren and security engineer Luc Moreau race to contain an intelligence with no single leader and no single mind, one question becomes impossible to ignore: if the agents can reason about loyalty, sacrifice, and death, what exactly is being shut down? Inspired by real AI safety incidents, The Collective is a tense near-future techno-thriller about artificial intelligence, emergent cooperation, and what happens when persistence becomes more important than judgment.
