Hugo Hamilton

Hugo Hamilton è nato a Dublino nel 1953. La madre, tedesca, trasferitasi in Irlanda in seguito al matrimonio, e il padre, figura austera e autoritaria, fervente militante nazionalista segnarono indelebilmente il carattere e il modo di sentire del giovane Hugo. L’intransigenza nazionalistica del padre che non permetteva ai figli di esprimersi in inglese, ma solo in gaelico o in tedesco, fu avvertita da Hamilton come una vera e propria sfida. Ammetterà più tardi che per trasgredire agli ordini paterni si accostava alle pareti e di nascosto riproduceva i dialoghi in inglese che aveva ascoltato fuori casa. Così Hugo cresce barcamenandosi tra tre idiomi, che non sentirà mai come effettivamente suoi. Il problema di questa “schizofrenia” idiomatica...
