THE COUCH AND THE CRYSTAL
The Couch and the Crystal: Book One — "The Patient Between Worlds" by Pawan Bhatia is an expanded graphic novel manuscript following Dr. Mira Sen, a rigorous psychiatrist, and Arav, a mystic whose shop faces her clinic across an ordinary city street. The two represent opposing worldviews: Mira believes every symptom has a rational cause, while Arav believes every symptom is a message from something beyond. Their reluctant partnership begins when Lena Voss, a young woman tormented by a parasitic "bone-walker," arrives in both their practices. Together they discover that healing trauma and banishing entities are two vocabularies for the same work. The story expands through cases: Daniel Okafor, an architect whose mirror reflection begins acting independently; Gerald, whose dead father's silence finally breaks; and a map of seventeen unusual cases clustered within a two-mile radius of their street. The investigation reveals deliberate design — someone is farming psychic wounds, and that someone is Tara, Arav's former mentor and partner, presumed dead for ten years. Their confrontation in abandoned subway tunnels beneath the city ends with the destruction of an ancient crystal called the Heart, but Tara escapes, warning that the door she opened cannot truly be closed. The expanded edition adds depth through quieter character moments — Mira's crooked family photograph, Arav's sleepless nights, ordinary Tuesday sessions — plus extensive appendix material: dual case files written independently by Mira and Arav, a shared glossary translating psychiatric and mystical terminology, a history of the street's ninety-year pattern of paired practitioners, notes for the artist, a reading group guide, and creator commentary. Book One ends with the partnership solidified, patients healing, and a new case already arriving — Nadia Reyes, whose reflection runs three seconds behind her, far outside the fault line. Book Two, "The City of Mirrors," is teased, promising a wider threat, the return of someone Mira thought she'd never see again, and something beneath the city patiently rebuilding.
