Edith Wharton's novels of manners seem to grow in stature as time passes. Here she draws a beautiful social climber, Undine Sprague, who is a monster of selfishness and honestly doesn't know it. Although the worlds she wants to conquer have vanished, Undine herself is amazingly recognizable. She marries well above herself twice and both times fails to recognize her husbands' strengths of character or the weakness of her own, and it is they, not she, who pay the price.

Scrittrice statunitense.Di famiglia ricchissima, nel 1885 sposa il banchiere Edward Wharton. Dopo la separazione dal marito si trasferisce in Francia, dove stringe amicizia con i maggiori scrittori e intellettuali del tempo, come Henry James, Sinclair Lewis, Jean Cocteau e André Gide. Nel 1902 pubblica il suo primo romanzo The Valley of Decision, cui seguono nel 1905 La casa della gioia, nel 1911 Ethan Frome e nel 1920 L’età dell’innocenza, le sue grandi opere. Muore in Francia nel 1937.
