(Milston, Wiltshire, 1672 - Londra 1719) scrittore inglese. Compiuti gli studi classici, entrò in parlamento tra i whigs (liberali); fu sottosegretario di stato e segretario del viceré d’Irlanda. Visitò l’Italia e la criticò aspramente nelle Osservazioni su varie parti d’Italia (Remarks on several parts of Italy, 1705), dove la satira anticattolica è tuttavia temperata dall’amore per la classicità. A. fu l’iniziatore del giornalismo letterario in Inghilterra: collaboratore per due anni di R. Steele nella redazione del «Tatler», fondò poi insieme a lui il famoso «Spectator» (1711-12 e 1714), imitato anche in Italia da G. Gozzi con la «Gazzetta veneta» e l’«Osservatore veneto».
