"Attore, regista e sceneggiatore inglese. Giovane prodigio del teatro britannico, costruisce in breve anche una solida carriera cinematografica grazie a un poliedrico talento interpretativo che si associa a una notevole arguzia. La sua prima apparizione di rilievo è in Volo senza ritorno (1942) di M. Powell ed E. Pressburger, mentre esordisce alla regia nel 1946 con School for Secrets (Scuola per segreti); seguono numerosissime interpretazioni nelle quali mette in mostra la sua innata predisposizione per i ruoli più ironici, non mancando di mostrare grande abilità anche in parti drammatiche. Nel 1951 è strabiliante nei panni di Nerone in Quo Vadis? di M. LeRoy, per poi recitare in Lord Brummel (1954) di C. Bernhardt e Lola Montès (1955) di M. Ophüls. Nel 1960 vince il primo Oscar come attore...
