What does it mean to live wisely, freely and in accordance with reason? In the second book of the Discourses, Epictetus examines some of the most demanding questions of Stoic philosophy: how courage can coexist with caution, how tranquillity may be preserved, how impressions should be confronted and how friendship, duty and moral character are to be understood. Recorded by his pupil Arrian, these discussions reveal philosophy not as abstract speculation but as a disciplined way of living.
