Empowering EMI Educators for Effective Teaching: Tools and Tips

Comprising of experiential voices and practical tips, this reader-friendly guide is a companion to English Medium Instruction (EMI) educators and teachers working in different educational settings around the world. This volume addresses some common slippery slopes encountered by educators within EMI classrooms including cultural nuances, linguistic diversity, multilevel classrooms, strategic use of students’ first language (L1), and language learning strategies. Using insightful examples from real classrooms, this book offers a comprehensive resource that allows teachers to dig deeper, reflect and improve their practices. Each chapter includes necessary knowledge, reasons for the importance of this knowledge, what is effective, the classroom context, helpful materials and links, and questions to stimulate reflection. The formulaic pattern makes the text easily navigable – an important consideration for busy teachers. Also addressed are the theoretical issues like scaffolding, translanguaging, comprehensible input, multimodality and strategy theory. The book will be of interest to researchers, academics and educators in the fields of English medium instruction (EMI), classroom practice, curriculum design and applied linguistics.
