Eric

She warned him about the woman he was about to marry. He moved out that week and never called again. Captain Eric Collins lands in Florida with two weeks of leave and a wedding invitation he refuses to think about. He steps on a woman's toes in the terminal, catches the scent of vanilla, and looks up into the face he has spent three years refusing to picture. Natalie Lyons roomed with him for three years in college. She was his best friend. She told him the truth about his fiancee, he called it something uglier, and he packed his things and cut her off. The wedding collapsed anyway. He signed with the Marines instead of picking up the phone. Now her flight dies on the board, a hurricane turns toward the coast, and Natalie gave her seat to her grandmother, so she has nowhere to go. Eric has his family's beach house and one night of nerve. She built a life that does not need him. He spent three years finding out she was right about all of it. The storm buys them one night. What he says in it decides the rest. Tropes: second chance, best friends to lovers, forced proximity, hurricane, Marine hero, grovel, one night that changes everything. A short story of about 6,100 words in the Collins Brothers world, a Cape Cod family series. Eric appears in the early Collins books before he leaves for the Marines.
