Essential Rhythm & Blues Hits
Double CD Edition
"Rhythm and Blues", or at least its original Fifties and Sixties incarnation, was a term usually attributed to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records. He had realised that there was a recognisable and distinct form of music that was prevalent in all the major cities of the United States. This compilation is drawn mainly from the 1958-1962 period. It was a time that conventional wisdom suggests there was very little exciting happening in music, as the first thrust of Rock'n'Roll had passed and the massive effect of the Beatles had yet to be unleashed. Instead there were the sanitised teen idols, who produced acceptable Pop for the teens without rocking any boats. However, there were hundreds of minor independent record labels springing up and feeding the black American market who sought something with a bit more guts and power.
