Compositore russo.Gli anni di formazione e la fase modernista. Allievo del conservatorio della città natale, si accostò ai più attivi movimenti dell'avanguardia rivoluzionaria, con Prokof'ev, Majakovskij, Meyerhold ecc. Nel 1926 la Sinfonia n. 1 lo rivelò sul piano internazionale, mettendo in luce una spregiudicata e originale assimilazione dei più vari ritrovati della musica contemporanea europea, sorretti da una straordinaria disinvoltura tecnica. Oltre a influssi di Rimskij-Korsakov e Prokof'ev, la sua produzione giovanile (sinfonica, da camera e teatrale), risente del neo-oggettivismo tedesco e francese, in particolare di Hindemith: vi domina un piglio aggressivo dai tratti grotteschi e ironici, timbricamente esuberante ed estroso nel ritmo; il suo linguaggio armonico ora sfocia nell'atonalità...
