Scrittore, storico dell'arte e fotografo, è nato negli Stati Uniti e cresciuto in Nigeria. Ora vive a Brooklyn. Città aperta, il suo primo romanzo, (pubblicato in Italia da Einaudi nel 2013), ha vinto il PEN/Hemingway Award, il New York City Book Award for Fiction e il Rosenthal Award, ed è risultato finalista al National Book Critics Circle Award, il New York Public Library Young Lions Award, e l'Ondaatje Prize della Royal Society of Literature.
