Cantante e attore statunitense. Dopo aver vinto un concorso canoro radiofonico si impone in breve tempo come uno dei più popolari solisti statunitensi, meritandosi il soprannome di «The voice», agli inizi degli anni '40. Di lì a poco esordisce sul grande schermo esibendosi prima come cantante, per poi guadagnarsi ruoli attoriali di tutto rispetto. I primi successi li ottiene in coppia con il ballerino G. Kelly in musical come Due marinai e una ragazza (1945) di G. Sidney e Un giorno a New York (1949) di S. Donen, in cui dà prova di notevole disinvoltura ed eclettismo. Agli inizi degli anni '50, colpito da gravi disturbi alle corde vocali, abbandona momentaneamente la canzone per dedicarsi al cinema: la sua recitazione istintiva e il serio impegno interpretativo, uniti a un talento eterogeneo...
