Il volume riunisce studiosi di diverse discipline per analizzare i valori economici e artistici dell'oro e il loro posto nel mondo interconnesso delle culture europee, africane, asiatiche e americane della prima età moderna. Sebbene l'oro sia riconosciuto come un equivalente universale "ammaliante", come recentemente discusso da Zorach e Phillips (2016), i valori dell'oro sono anche storicamente specifici. Il primo mondo moderno rappresenta uno dei momenti cruciali di trasformazione dell'oro, quando i suoi vari significati e ruoli sono stati riaffermati e/o trasformati. Il volume si concentra sull'articolazione di istanze specifiche di usi, ruoli e valori mutevoli dell'oro all'interno delle arene artistiche, economiche e simboliche delle culture mondiali.
