The Great Rewrite: How Artificial Intelligence Remade the Software Engineering Organization

In April 2025, a CEO posted a memo to the open internet before his own employees could leak it. One line inside it would rewrite the org chart of an entire industry: reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation. Attached was a budget rule with teeth — no new hires, no new resources, until a team proved a human was actually necessary. This is the story of what happened next. Using Shopify's public terms as its spine, this book traces how artificial intelligence dismantled and rebuilt the modern technology company — function by function, in a sequence that was never announced but can now be reconstructed. Quality assurance fell first. Engineering followed, and discovered that writing code was never the bottleneck — reviewing it was. Product, finance, and HR came after, each absorbing the shockwaves of the functions before it. Drawing on the public statements of the executives who ran the rest of the sector — Pichai, Nadella, Jassy, Siemiatkowski — this book assembles the receipts into a single, dated argument about how work actually changed. The final chapters project five years forward, to the technology company nobody has been honest about yet. Read it before your org chart gets rewritten too.
