Compositore inglese.La vita e le opere giovanili. Mostrò un precocissimo talento scrivendo a dieci anni una Simple Symphony per archi, ancora eseguita. Studiò con F. Bridge, poi con J. Ireland. In stretto contatto, dal 1935, con il poeta W.H. Auden, lo seguì nel 1939 negli Stati Uniti, dove rimase fino al 1942 insieme all'amico Peter Pears. Rientrato in patria quell'anno, collaborò ai concerti per il periodo bellico organizzati dal governo inglese in tutto il paese. Nel 1947 fu tra i fondatori dell'«English Opera Group» per il teatro musicale da camera; nel 1948 prese parte all'istituzione del festival musicale di Aldeburgh, a cui rimase legato per tutta la vita. Intensamente attivo come pianista (in collaborazione con il tenore Peter Pears) e come direttore d'orchestra delle proprie composizioni,...
