Matthew Bramble, a gout-ridden misanthrope, travels Britain with his nephew, niece, spinster sister and man-servant, the trusty Humphry Clinker. In poor health, Bramble sees the world as one of degeneracy and raucous overcrowding, and will not hesitate to let his companions know his feelings on the matter. Tobias Smollett

(Dalquhurn, Dumbartonshire, 1721 - Antignano, Livorno, 1771) scrittore scozzese. Laureatosi in medicina all’università di Glasgow, si trasferì a Londra per tentare la fortuna come drammaturgo. Il mancato successo lo spinse a imbarcarsi come assistente chirurgo su una nave da guerra inglese. Le sue esperienze gli ispirarono il primo romanzo, Le avventure di Roderick Random (The adventures of Roderick Random, 1748), che, nel piglio picaresco e nel realismo crudo e brutale, risente l’influenza del Gil Blas di Lesage. Seguirono Le avventure di Peregrine Pickle (The adventures of Peregrine Pickle, 1751) e Le avventure di Ferdinand Count Fathom (The adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom, 1753), due romanzi piuttosto farraginosi nei quali la narrazione si colora a volte di presentimenti del neogotico...
