Scrittore, giornalista e antropologo indiano. Ha studiato a Oxford e vive tra la sua città natale e New York. Della sua scrittura ha detto: «Ciò che mi interessa veramente è scrivere sulle persone, non sono un giornalista politico, ma mi dedico alla storia delle persone. Mi interessa l’influenza degli eventi sulle persone. E anche negli articoli che scrivo, cerco di trattare soprattutto l’ottica individuale.»Considerato "uno dei più grandi scrittori indiani" (la Repubblica), è autore di numerosi libri di cui si citano: Il cerchio della ragione (Garzanti, 1986), Le linee d’ombra (Einaudi, 1990), I fantasmi della signora Gandhi (Einaudi, 1996).
