Compositore tedesco.Le vicende biografiche. Nulla si sa dei suoi primi studi musicali, avversati in famiglia (era figlio di una guardia forestale). Iscrittosi all'università di Praga nel 1731 (facoltà di logica), fu poi al servizio (come «musico di camera») del principe G. Lobkowitz a Vienna; nel 1737 conobbe il principe A.M. Melzi, dal quale fu condotto a Milano, dove studiò con G.B. Sammartini ed esordì come operista nel 1741. Soggiornò poi a Londra (1745-46) avendo contatti con Händel; stabilitosi infine a Vienna (1752), maturò, sotto la spinta di collaboratori italiani (il conte G. Durazzo, direttore generale degli spettacoli di corte, il librettista R. de' Calzabigi, il coreografo e ballerino G. Angiolini), il suo progetto di riforma del melodramma, iniziato con l'Orfeo ed Euridice (1762)...

Direttore d'orchestra. Dopo aver vinto il concorso «Cantelli» (1967) si mise in luce alla testa delle principali orchestre italiane e straniere: direttore stabile dell'orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1969-73); direttore principale, poi musicale, della New Philharmonia Orchestra di Londra (1973-83), direttore musicale dell'Orchestra di Filadelfia (1980-92) e dal 1986 successore di C. Abbado alla direzione musicale della Scala. Eccelle sia nel repertorio sinfonico sia in quello operistico, con una spiccata predilezione per le opere di Mozart e Verdi, ma anche di Rossini, Bellini e Donizetti ricondotte al testo originale. Le sue qualità interpretative lo avvicinano a Toscanini per energia, senso drammatico, ritmo elettrizzante, oltre che per il ferreo controllo degli...
