Direttore d'orchestra inglese. Allievo di Th. Dart a Londra e di N. Boulanger a Parigi, ha fondato nel 1964 a Cambridge il Monteverdi Choir, specializzato nell'esecuzione di musiche da Monteverdi a Händel, a cui ha affiancato nel 1968 la Monteverdi Orchestra. Nello stesso tempo si è affermato come un'autorità nella riscoperta del teatro operistico dei secc. xvii e xviii con realizzazioni in scena e in disco di opere di M.A. Charpentier, Händel, Rameau, Gluck. Nel 1989 e nel '90 ha iniziato l'incisione discografica rispettivamente di un ciclo di opere di Mozart e di Gluck con strumenti d'epoca.

John Gay

(Barnstaple, Devonshire, 1685 - Londra 1732) scrittore inglese. Amico di Pope e di Swift, fu da questi stimolato ad affrontare in senso parodistico i generi letterari allora in voga. In particolare mise in caricatura la poesia pastorale e i suoi luoghi comuni nei 6 poemetti che compongono La settimana del pastore (The shepherd’s week, 1714) e in Trivia (1716). Il suo capolavoro è considerato L’opera del mendicante (The beggar’s opera, 1728), parodia del melodramma e vivace rappresentazione della malavita londinese, ripresa da B. Brecht nella sua Opera da tre soldi.
