(Londra 1906-85) scrittore inglese. È autore di oltre settanta romanzi polizieschi, ambientati negli USA e dominati da una visione pessimistica e violenta della società. Si ricordano: Niente orchidee per Miss Blandish (No orchids for Miss Blandish, 1939), il romanzo del suo esordio, ricalcato su Santuario di Faulkner; La carne dell’orchidea (The flesh of the orchid, 1948); La tigre per la coda (Tiger by the tail, 1954); La morte fa l’autostop (There is a hippy on the highway, 1971).
