The Late Spring

At fifty-two, Margaret Ashworth's life has quietly emptied out. Divorced, her children grown, she fills her days dusting a flat that is too large for one—until a solicitor's letter arrives with an old key and a note in a hand she hasn't seen since childhood: For the late bloomer. Margaret has inherited Wren's End, a crooked cottage in the hidden valley of Willowmere, along with an overgrown herb garden, a dusty village shop called The Bramble & Bee, and a very opinionated orange cat. She only plans to sort it out and leave. She never plans on staying. But Willowmere has other ideas. When she makes tea for a grieving neighbour, the tea does more than comfort. When a boy brings her an injured fox, her hands already know how to mend it. And when the cat—who has always been able to speak—finally tells her the truth, Margaret learns what she has spent a lifetime pretending not to know: the magic was never missing. It was only waiting. The valley is fading, a little more each year, and the women who once kept it are gone. All that remains is one late-blooming witch, a circle that must be remade, and a choice Margaret never believed she would have the courage to make. A warm, gently funny tale of second chances, found family, and the magic that begins—not in youth—but in the second half of life.
